I WAS A ROMAN CATHOLIC for the first 33 years of my life! I was taught the CATHOLIC CATECHISM at school, and I remember well, the answer to this question from that Catechism:
Question: "Why do we call that day GOOD on which Jesus Christ died ?"
Answer: "We call that day good, on which Jesus Christ died, because His death has shown how much He loved us and has brought us so many blessings" ????
NOTE: NO MENTION OF SALVATION!

The Holy Bible has the REAL ANSWER(S)
There are many proofs in Scripture, and these are just two:
REVELATION Ch. 1 verse 5:
5 "And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us and washed us from our sins in his own blood."
