EARLY YEARS (1813 - 1827)

Robert M'Cheyne was born in Edinburgh in May, 1813, the youngest child in a family of five. His father was a prosperous lawyer and a man of social importance. Their spacious home, with its gardens, commanded a glorious view across to the shores of Fife. Here in Edinburgh M'Cheyne spent his childhood and youth.

After passing successfully though the High School, he entered the Arts Faculty of the University in autumn 1827. "He was of a lively turn" - his father later recorded - "and, during the first two or three years of his attendance at the University, he turned his attention to elocution and poetry and the pleasures of society …" M'Cheyne became at this time an eager participant in the city's fashionable entertainments, and scenes of gaiety - card playing, dancing, music - occupied his leisure hours.

First, M'Cheyne was different in doctrine. His preaching was clearly and definitely in line with the faith of the Reformers and Puritans. That glorious Puritan document, in which every doctrine is given its true Scriptural proportion - The Westminster Confession of Faith - was his constant text book. "Oh for the grace of the Westminster divines," he writes, "to be poured out upon this generation of lesser men." Walter "Robbie" Robinson was not in Newcastle on Tuesday to hear the gasps when Magistrate Robert Stone delivered his decision.

But he knew how significant the verdict was.
When Philip Wilson, the Catholic Archbishop of Adelaide, was found guilty of covering up child sexual abuse, reverberations from the landmark ruling made it all the way to Boston.
Although Professor Robinson — a Pulitzer Prize-winner and veteran newspaperman — deflects much of the credit, he began writing this story 16 years ago.
Professor Robinson ran Boston Globe's "Spotlight Team" in the early 2000s and its investigation into child sexual abuse within the Catholic Church.
Their ground-breaking reporting was turned into the 2015 feature film Spotlight, which won an Academy Award for best picture that year.
The 72-year-old remains the paper's editor-at-large and, after making a career out of putting the church under a microscope, followed yesterday's decision from the other side of the world.
"Wilson is a peculiar case because it's one of the very few instances in which the person in charge who covered up the abuse and enabled the abuse to continue has actually been held accountable," he told the ABC.

What Charles Spurgeon Said About the Emerging Church May 15, 2018 (first published February 19, 2009) The emerging church represented by Brian McLaren and the Emergent village is not as new as it appears to be. It was already raising its ugly head in the late 19th century, because Charles Spurgeon described it perfectly in his comments on James 5:19-20. He called it “modern thought” and “deceitful infidelity.” Spurgeon also described the tolerant attitude of modern evangelicalism that puts up with emerging heresies. He called this “latitudinarianism.” SPURGEON’S COMMENTS ON JAMES 5:19-20 “Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him; Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins” (James 5:19-20). It was not merely that he fell into a mistake upon some lesser matter which might be compared to the fringe of the gospel, but he erred in some vital doctrine--he departed from the faith in its fundamentals. There are some truths which must be believed, they are essential to salvation, and if not heartily accepted the soul will be ruined. This man had been professedly orthodox, but he turned aside from the truth on an essential point. Now, in those days the saints did not say: ‘We must be largely charitable, and leave this brother to his own opinion; he sees truth from a different standpoint, and has a rather different way of putting it, but his opinions are as good as our own, and we must not say that he is in error.’ That is at present the fashionable way of trifling with divine truth, and making things pleasant all round. Thus the gospel is debased and another gospel propagated. I should like to ask modern broad churchmen whether there is any doctrine of any sort for which it would be worth a man’s while to burn or to lie in prison. St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa, inaugurated a new prayer space for Muslim students this week, co-designed by the Saudi Student Association.

The new prayer space, which is equipped with sinks for ritual foot-washing and separate areas for male and female worshippers, was built in memory of Father Joe DeFrancisco, a professor of comparative religions who died last July at the age of 69.

At the priest’s “ecumenical” funeral Mass in 2017, fellow Catholic clergy were joined at the altar by a rabbi, an imam, an Anglican priest and a Lutheran chaplain, according to the college’s website .

Pastor Ibrahim Ag Mohamed,

LONDON, is a converted Muslim.

During his years of schooling, in which he learned French and later English, the influence of Islam also shaped Ibrahim. Required to commit the Qur'an (or Koran) in Arabic to memory, he was compelled to believe its tenets without question, though he did not fully understand its meaning.

As a young adult, along with a group of other young men, Ibrahim burned Bibles and any Christian literature he could find. According to their Muslim beliefs, these writings were the corrupted Word of God, and therefore should be destroyed.

One day Ibrahim found a Gideon New Testament that belonged to a cousin who had become a Christian several years earlier. Ibrahim could see that his cousin's life had changed in ways that he admired. Also, his cousin prayed in his own Tamasheq language, demonstrating it was possible to communicate with God in one's mother tongue.

While reading the New Testament, two concepts struck Ibrahim. First, the genealogy in Matthew outlined a history he was familiar with, including such names as Abraham and King David. His interest piqued, as chapter after chapter drew him in.

Then he read Jesus' own words: "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Mtatthew 11:28, KJV). "This," says Ibrahim, "is my best word in the Bible: 'Come.' It's an invitation. … "
