Vatican City (AFP) - Pope Francis will celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation by attending an ecumenical service in Sweden as a guest of the Lutheran church, the Vatican said Monday.In a highly symbolic act of reconciliation that would even recently have been unthinkable for a Catholic pontiff, Francis will visit the Swedish city of Lund on October 31 for a commemoration jointly organised by his own inter-faith agency and the Lutheran World Federation (LWF).

The surprise move will see the head of the world's Catholics worship alongside the heirs to a religious tradition founded in opposition to the church of Rome and which once regarded the pope as the anti-Christ.

FORT WORTH, Texas (Christian Examiner) – Kenneth Copeland and Jesse Duplantis – both multi-millionaire preachers of the "name it and claim it" prosperity gospel – have taken to the air to explain their need for private luxury jets, in part because they travel to so many locations weekly, but also so they won't have to fly with "demons."
Duplantis said in a five minute video clip Dec. 30 (begin at 2:08) that God revealed to him the need for the private jet in the midst of a flight in his plane, just after a meeting with fellow prosperity preacher Creflo Dollar – the minister who this summer produced a slick marketing video asking his followers to donate $60 million for a new jet.
The board of directors for Dollar's ministry later apologized for the video, but insisted the luxury aircraft was a legitimate need for the minister.

Duplantis said in the segment, which originally aired on the Kenneth Copeland Ministries website, that God asked him if he liked his plane.
"As I was going home, the Lord, real quickly, he said, 'Jesse, do you like your plane?'" Duplantis said. "I thought, 'That's an odd statement.' I said, 'Well, certainly, Lord.' He said, 'Do you really like it?' And I thought, 'Well, yes, Lord.' Then he said this: 'So that's it? You gonna let your faith stagnate?'"
Duplantis said the comment shocked him, causing him to unbuckle his seatbelt and stand up in the plane. The pilots, he then said, asked him if he needed something.

Pope Francis has both praised the internet for being a "gift from God" and criticised technology — and particularly social media — for being alienating and a source of "mental pollution".

On Friday, the 79-year-old Argentine pontiff will have a chance to reconcile those two statements as he meets Eric Schmidt, executive chairman of Alphabet, the new holding company for Google, for a brief meeting at the Vatican. The meeting has been confirmed by two people familiar with the matter.
Pope Francis — an ardent critic of unfettered free markets — has rarely granted private audiences to global business leaders since being elected to the helm of the Catholic Church in 2013. However, on his trip to the US last year he did spare some time to meet prominent Wall Street figures, including Steve Schwarzman, the founder of Blackstone, the private equity firm.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has backed a toughening of expulsion rules for convicted refugees as protesters took to the streets against sexual attacks by gangs of migrants.

The inmates are running the asylum. Germany is a funny place right now. First, Angela Merkel approves the importing of nearly 800,000 Muslim migrants, the majority of whom are at the very least welfare-seeking sponges, or at the worst jihadi terrorists pretending to be Syrian war refugees. So ok, Merkel lets these people in and immediately Germany is hit with hundreds and hundreds of sexual attacks against women, attacks against men, and a trail of litter and refuse a mile wide. Groups like Pegida that have sprung up to do what their own country refuses to do are castigated and marginalized as if they were the criminals!

In 1945, more than 4,000 American GIs were imprisoned at Stalag IX-B at Bad Orb, approximately 30 miles northwest of Frankfurt-on-Main. One day the commandant had prisoners assembled in a field. All Jews were ordered to take one step forward. Word ran through the ranks not to move. The non-Jews told their Jewish comrades they would stand with them. The commandant said the Jews would have until six the next morning to identify themselves. The prisoners were told, moreover, that any Jews in the barracks after 24 hours would be shot, as would anyone trying to hide or protect them.

American Jewish soldiers had to decide what to do. All had gone into battle with dog tags bearing an "H" for Hebrew. Some had disposed of their IDs when they were captured, others decided to do so after the commandant's threat.

Approximately 130 Jews ultimately came forward. They were segregated and placed in a special barracks. Some 50 noncommissioned officers from the group were taken out of the camp, along with the non-Jewish NCOs.

The Germans had a quota of 350 for a special detail. All the remaining Jews were taken, along with prisoners considered troublemakers, those they thought were Jewish and others chosen at random. This group left Bad Orb on February 8. They were placed in trains under conditions similar to those faced by European Jews deported to concentration camps. Five days later, the POWs arrived in Berga, a quaint German town of 7,000 people on the Elster River, whose concentration camps appear on few World War II maps.

Conditions in Stalag IX-B were the worst of any POW camp, but they were recalled fondly by the Americans transferred to Berga, who discovered the main purpose for their imprisonment was to serve as slave laborers. Each day, the men trudged approximately two miles through the snow to a mountainside in which 17 mine shafts were dug 100 feet apart. There, under the direction of brutal civilian overseers, the Americans were required to help the Nazis build an underground armament factory.

The men worked in shafts as deep as 150 feet that were so dusty it was impossible to see more than a few feet in front of you. The Germans would blast the slate loose with dynamite and then, before the dust settled, the prisoners would go down to break up the rock so that it could be shoveled into mining cars.

The men did what they could to sustain each other. "You kept each other warm at night by huddling together," said Daniel Steckler. "We maintained each other's welfare by sharing body heat, by sharing the paper-thin blankets that were given to us, by sharing the soup, by sharing the bread, by sharing everything."

"Surviving was all you thought about," Winfield Rosenberg agreed. "You were so worn down you didn't even think of all the death that was around you." He said his faith sustained him. "I knew I'd go to heaven if I died, because I was already in hell."

On April 4, 1945, the commandant received an order to evacuate Berga. This was but the end of a chapter of the Americans' ordeal. The human skeletons who had survived found no cause to rejoice in this flight from hell. They were leaving friends behind and returning to the unknown.

Fewer than 300 men survived the 50 days they had spent in Berga. Over the next two-and-a-half weeks, before the survivors were liberated, at least 36 more GIs died on a march to avoid the approaching Allied armies. The fatality rate in Berga, including the march, was the highest of any camp where American POWs were held—nearly 20 percent—and the 70-73 men who were killed represented approximately six percent of all Americans who perished as POWs during World War II.

This was not the only case where American Jewish soldiers were segregated or otherwise mistreated, but it was the most dramatic. The U.S. Government never publicly acknowledged they were mistreated. In fact, one survivor was told he should go to a psychiatrist. Officials at the VA told him he had made up the whole story.

Two of the Nazis responsible for the murder and mistreatment of American soldiers were tried. They were found guilty and sentenced to hang, despite the fact that none of the survivors testified at the trial . Later, the case was reviewed and the verdicts upheld. Nevertheless, five years after being tried, the Chief of the War Crimes Branch unilaterally decided the evidence was insufficient to sustain the charges and commuted the sentences to time served — about six years.

False Prophet Points to a Door Not the Cross

Pope Francis has commenced the Jubilee Year of Mercy by offering a plenary indulgence for the remission of the punishment for sins. All those who pass through the Holy Door in St. Peter's Basilica will receive the indulgence. This is the first time the Holy Door has been opened since the Great Jubilee in the year 2000.

The opening of the door is meant to be symbolic of the "extraordinary path" toward salvation. The pope opened the door on December 8, the feast of the Immaculate Conception. In his homily he said, "Not only does God forgive sin, but in Mary he even averts the original sin present in every man and woman who comes into this world." In closing he prayed, "May the Blessed Virgin, the first fruits of the saved, the model of the Church, holy and immaculate Bride, loved by the Lord, help us to rediscover the mercy of God more and more, in a way characteristic of Christians." Mike's Comment: If Catholics were abiding in God's Word, they would be asking the pope, "Why do we have to go through a door instead of coming to the cross of Christ with empty hands of faith?" Why go through a wooden door made with human hands when the eternal Christ is the only door by which sinners must enter to be forgiven (John 10:9). The apostle Paul wrote, "God made [believers] alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This He set aside, nailing it to the cross" (Col. 2:13-14). The eternal sin debt was cancelled when the perfect High Priest offered Himself, the perfect sacrifice to a perfect God who demands perfection. Then Jesus cried out, "It is finished!" (John 19:30). There are no more offerings for sin because by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified (Heb. 10:14).
