Many of us have heard the statement from ROMAN CATHOLIC friends:
''I WAS BORN A CATHOLIC AND I WILL DIE A CATHOLIC."
If this is a statement that YOU have made, please read the following from
a former Catholic, MIKE GENDRON. Statement: "I was born a Catholic and I will die a Catholic."
Response: According to God's Word you were born a sinner
and will die a sinner unless you are born again (Ps. 51:5; Ps. 58:3. John 3:3,
7; 1 Pet. 1:23). You must repent and believe the Gospel (Mark 1:15).
Statement: "Sola Scriptura is a Protestant
tradition; you cannot find it in the Bible."
Response: You are right! Sola Scriptura is a Protestant tradition and it is not in the Bible.
However, you need to know why the Reformers proclaimed it. Throughout the first
1600 years of the church, Scripture was the supreme authority in all matters of
faith. It was not until the counter-Reformation at the Council of Trent
that the Catholic Church elevated its religious traditions to be equal in authority to God's
Word. The proclamation of Sola
Scriptura was a necessary response to the heresies and anathemas that
opposed and nullified Scripture. The Lord Jesus used Scripture to confront and
correct Satan and the apostate religious leaders of His day (Matt. 4:3-11;
15:3-9). Therefore, the authority of Scripture must be used to correct and
reprove all false teachings (2 Tim. 3:16).
