Is the Pope the Antichrist?
For nearly a thousand years, Bible believing
Christians believed that the Antichrist is, in fact, the papal system
of Rome. This belief can be documented from John Wycliffe in the 14th
century to Charles Haddon Spurgeon in the 19th century; yet it is very
likely that earlier Christian movements held to the same view. As
Martin Luther wrote:
“We are not the first to declare the papacy to be the kingdom of
Antichrist, since for many years before us so many and such great
men (whose number is large and whose memory is eternal) have
undertaken to express the same thing so clearly and plainly.”
(Martin Luther, as cited by Dave Hunt in “A Woman Rides the
Beast,” p. 257)

The Westminster Confession of Faith, established in 1646 stated:
“There is no other head of the church but the Lord Jesus Christ:
nor can the Pope of Rome in any sense be head thereof, but is that
Antichrist, that man of sin and son of perdition that exalteth himself
in the church against Christ and all that is called God.”
(Westminster Confession, Chapter 25)
